Play Breakdown - GT Counter Triple Option

A modern evolution of the triple option, this play merges GT counter blocking with spread option principles. The quarterback reads the backside EDGE defender post-snap. If that defender crashes on the counter dive, the QB pulls the ball and immediately looks to his second readβ€”the pitch key, usually a safety or outside backer.

An orbit motion from the slot creates eye candy and a real perimeter threat. If the pitch key plays the QB, he dishes the ball to the orbiting receiver looping around as the third option. If the defender widens or sits on the pitch, the QB keeps and runs.

What makes this play so dangerous is its ability to create a numbers advantage in two places: at the point of attack with counter action, or outside with the triple option. Defenses are forced to commit and risk being wrong. It’s especially effective against aggressive fronts or undisciplined perimeter players. Call it to stress teams horizontally and punish backside pursuit.
